This a pretty cool video rap. Insane rhyming. And unlike traditional gangsta rap like 50 cent, this actually feels meaningful.

Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon.com once voiced this sentiment:

“We want to be the world’s most consumer-centric company… We focus incessantly on trying to get the customer experience right… See we’re not a book company. We’re not a music company. We’re not a video company. We’re not an auctions company. We’re a customer company.”

That was back in 1999 during an interview with BusinessWeek. Amazon is now an undisputed leader in online shopping and the reviews on their website make Amazon the world’s most trusted source.

The traditional mass marketing funnel looked like this: Create an an ad broadcasted to one million people.  Get a 1%  response on a $100 product. Then collect $1 million dollars. Finish.

This is what mass marketers do – throw as large a net as possible. The Internet would be perfect for such a model, right?

Getting A Great Employee Is Hard

Though this blog focuses on generating leads for your business, but I will be sharing on what bosses want in employees. Getting a good employee is hard to come by, getting a great one is like you found a diamond out of nowhere. Why do I say that?

Recently I was having lunch with one of my female friends who owned a printing company that her employee had worked there for almost 3 years now but still do not know some of the basic terms in printing. My friend had to teach her employee over and over again. She shared that it was very tiring and frustrating to do these unnecessary teaching again and again.

I can understand her feeling, where I too saw this situation in one of the companies where I worked before. The worst thing that happened was when this colleague of mine shared our database to a business partner for FREE! That was a very serious mistake, and thank God he was not sacked.

What makes a good employee, or should I rephrase it – what is it that a employer is looking for in a employee? Below are some of the points:

Giving Money Away Strategy

Giving out discount coupons are so passe. Now to promote spending and prop up the economy, giving out cash is another strategy to increase your customer base and push them to spend more. We see this from the Taiwan government giving out shopping vouchers that are equal to cash to its citizens to promote consumer spending. Economists believes that Asia should spend to push the economy out of the gloom.

I’m all for spending and stimulating the economy. And when I drop by the shopping centres in Singapore, the empty walkways / footpaths plus really great discounts make shopping such a great experience. But the truth is – now the fight is for consumers to open their wallets when in reality – most are keeping it very close to their pockets. Job losses, lack of jobs available – these are worrying times that do not encourage spending.

That was until I came across the Equatorial Hotel advertisement.

I love this great marketing strategy by a Malaysian hotel. It is really a fantastic idea -  I’m thinking of packing my bags to go over this weekend.

What Does The Internet Say About Your Company?

This post was prompted when I read an article on ChrisBrogan.com about customer experiences. Now this story is based in the US but I think the relevancy is very important back to customer service in Singapore.

Beth Ziesenis from Life on Avenue Z was unhappy about her experience with her SanDisk player which died on her while she was jogging. Using Twitter which is a micro-blogging service, she fired off a less than 140 characters post (also called a “tweet”) about her unhappiness with her brand new Sansa player. Within hours, someone from SanDisk saw the “tweet” and immediately replied. The SanDisk PR manager who saw her tweet managed to get Beth’s Sansa player replaced after exchanging a few emails and trying to understand the source of the problem of the player.

That simple “tweet” got the attention of over 600 people and when Beth shared the news of her excellent customer experience with SanDisk on her Twitter account – the message got retweeted (mentioned again by her followers) thousands of times. SanDisk has clearly understood the power of the Internet and closely monitored the online world for mentions of their products.

Not only that, SanDisk has gone beyond just monitoring but actually reaching out to customers. Its ability to use online tools like Twitter and leverage on it has generated goodwill amongst many in the Twitter-sphere and online world in general. People will remember SanDisk as a customer-oriented company.

Our Site is On Top of Google: Why Should We Pay For PPC?

Many companies say they are already on top of Google rankings. This is true – but only for their company names.

If someone were to type in their company name, they will be the first on the search results. But if searchers were looking for their products or services, they won’t be on top or maybe even the first page. When you look at your analytics, find out what type of keywords they use to find your website.

If most of the search terms are using your company name, it means that the current traffic on your website are visitors who already KNOW you. You’re not getting new customers who are looking for your type of category and products but unaware of your existence.

As the world becomes more and more dependent on the internet: Searching, finding information, knowing the latest results, latest news, and even buying products online. You can say that the future will be with the internet.

Of course, we cannot forget the traditional marketing like, newspaper ad, radio, banners and T.V commercials etc. But in all ways – they are much more expensive than using online marketing. I have a friend who provides painting services for houses and offices. This means his business is a local industry and depends on how big your country is.

You might only focus on the state that you live in only. My friend Alex has been in business for over 30 years and he offers the lowest and professional painting services in our country.

Car Advertisements in Recession Times

Last Saturday, I was flipping through The Straits Times Classified section. I prefer scanning the classifieds on Saturday due to the larger volume and variety of ads present. But I was overwhelmed by the amount of car advertisements. Was it an overkill? There was about 16 pages of advertisements, all eye-catching in their own way. From free COEs to free petrol, it seems car dealers are pulling all stops to attract buyers to their showrooms.

There was one particular ad that caught my eye. The headline was “You can now bring your own price tag.” It was from Citroen with the car prices slashed and replaced with the words “Your Price?”.

Fantastic. Does it mean if I asked for $1 – would they give it to me? I’m quite sure the answer is NO, but it does make me wonder that flexibility and negotiating car prices has become a whole lot easier.

Marketing that works are marketing that get a response to do an action. This was a good ad that was better than most – as it has a call-to-action. Not a clear call but nevertheless a call to come down to the showroom to negotiate your price with them.
